Morgan Rogers Joins Chelsea in Record £117m Transfer
Chelsea have completed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £117 million, making the attacking midfielder the most expensive British footballer in history.
The 23-year-old has signed a contract running until 2033 and will join Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season. Although neither club officially disclosed the transfer fee, reports suggest the total package has surpassed Chelsea’s previous club record.
Chelsea’s official announcement confirming the signing described Rogers as one of the Premier League’s leading young attacking players following his rapid development at Villa Park.
“I’m so excited,” Rogers said after completing the move. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.”
Chelsea Move Quickly to Beat Arsenal
Chelsea reportedly moved decisively to secure Rogers after Arsenal had spent several months exploring a potential deal with Aston Villa.
Arsenal had been considered favourites to sign the England international, but Chelsea entered negotiations and reached an agreement with Villa before their London rivals could complete the transfer.
According to details surrounding the £117 million deal, the opportunity to work with newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso played an important role in Rogers’ decision.
The size of the reported fee would make Rogers Chelsea’s record signing, moving him above Moisés Caicedo, who joined from Brighton for a reported £115 million in 2023.
It would also make him the most expensive British player, surpassing the reported package Manchester City agreed for Elliot Anderson earlier in the summer.
Why Did Morgan Rogers Choose Chelsea?

Rogers said Chelsea’s sporting project, current squad and plans under Alonso convinced him that Stamford Bridge was the right destination.
The former Aston Villa attacker held several conversations with Alonso before completing the move. Rogers said the manager’s approach fitted the way he wanted to play and would allow him to express himself on the pitch.
In his first interview as a Chelsea player, Rogers described Alonso’s influence as a major factor behind the transfer.
The England international will also reunite with close friend Cole Palmer. The pair first played together in England’s youth teams before spending time in Manchester City’s academy system.
Rogers revealed that he and Palmer had discussed playing together again and were excited about lining up in the same Chelsea attack.
What Will Rogers Bring to Chelsea?
Rogers can operate as an attacking midfielder, winger or supporting forward, giving Alonso several options across Chelsea’s front line.
His ability to carry the ball through midfield, create chances and contribute goals could make him an important part of the manager’s plans. He arrives after registering 40 combined goals and assists in 85 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa.
Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024 and developed into a key player under Unai Emery. He scored 31 goals in 125 appearances for the Midlands club and helped Villa secure a top-four Premier League finish.
He was also part of the team that won the Europa League, scoring in the 3-0 final victory over Freiburg. Aston Villa have now confirmed his permanent departure following two and a half successful seasons at Villa Park.
Chelsea Signal Their Ambition Under Xabi Alonso

The signing represents a major statement from Chelsea following a disappointing Premier League campaign in which the club finished 10th.
Rogers becomes another significant addition to a squad being reshaped under Alonso. Chelsea have also strengthened with players including Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda during the summer window.
The pressure will now be on Alonso to build an effective attacking system around Rogers, Palmer and Chelsea’s other young forwards.
For Rogers, the move provides an opportunity to establish himself as one of the central figures in Chelsea’s attempt to return to title contention. The £117 million valuation will create considerable expectations, but his Premier League experience, versatility and recent international progress suggest Chelsea believe he can make an immediate impact.
After helping England secure third place at the 2026 World Cup, Rogers will take a short break before joining his new team-mates and preparing for the start of the Premier League season.
